Tendinopathy/Tendinitis

Tendinopathy & Tendinitis

Generalized Injuries > Tendinopathy/Tendinitis

Tendinopathy is the overarching term for pain and inflammation of a tendon and it’s associated structures. Tendinitis specifically refers to inflammation of the tendon, and tenosynovitis to inflammation of the tendon sheath. It is almost impossible to determine which structure is irritated (and they often both are as they are so closely related) with clinical tests or diagnostic imaging, but fear not - the treatment protocol is the same regardless!

Mechanism of Injury: Repetitive movement (overuse) is the primary cause of tendinopathy - think throwing/pitching, running, hammering, etc.

Contributing Factors: Overuse. Training errors.  Inefficient movement patterns.  Weakness up the kinematic chain (shoulder for elbow, hip for knee, etc.).  Poor soft tissue or joint mobility.

Signs/Symptoms: Pain with movement. A feeling of a pop/snap upon injury. Tenderness to the touch. Swelling/discoloration in the area.

At Home Tests: MMT (resisted muscle movement)

At Home Treatment: Rest. Ice for 20 mins. Elevation. NSAID usage.

When to Seek Help: Contact your physical therapist if the pain prevents you from continues or gets worse in 7 days.

Treatment at Inspired Athletx: Initial treatment for a muscle strain will focus on manual therapy to reduce spasm, pain, and any swelling that may be present, as well as restore normal function and mobility.  Subsequent treatment will address the underlying factors that contributed to your injury, including soft tissue and joint mobility restrictions, weakness, and inefficient movement patterns. Click here to schedule a physical therapy evaluation with us.
