Creatine: It’s not all the same
Creatine is one of the most researched and effective performance supplements available. Decades of research support its ability to improve strength, power, high-intensity exercise performance and muscle development when combined with resistance training.
But there's something most people don't realize.
While nearly every creatine supplement promises the same benefits, the raw ingredient in your container may have come from a very different manufacturing process than the one in another brand's container.
In fact, according to AlzChem, the German manufacturer of Creapure, its facility is the only creatine production facility in the Western world. Other major commercial creatine producers are located in China.
That means even a creatine supplement marketed by an American company—and packaged in the United States—may contain raw creatine manufactured in China.
Does that automatically make it inferior? No.
But it raises an important question: Do you actually know where your creatine comes from, how it's manufactured or what's being done to verify its purity?
The creatine supply chain: What you're actually buying
Most consumers assume that buying supplements from a reputable American company means the ingredients are manufactured in the United States. That's not necessarily true.
Creatine monohydrate is manufactured through chemical synthesis. The raw material is produced, purified, crystallized and dried before being sold to supplement companies.
Those companies may then micronize, blend, package or distribute the finished product under their own brand.
Chinese manufacturing does not automatically mean poor quality. A manufacturer with strong quality controls and independently verified testing can produce excellent creatine. The issue is that many supplement brands don't identify their actual raw-material manufacturer, making it difficult for consumers to evaluate those controls.
A label that says "manufactured in the USA" does not mean that the creatine was synthesized here, in fact, it was almost assuredly sourced from China, if it isn’t labeled Creapure.
Creapure: A different approach to manufacturing
Look for it on the label.
AlzChem publishes several specific manufacturing and quality assurances.
At least 99.9% purity: Creapure is manufactured to a defined high-purity specification.
Dedicated manufacturing facility: Production takes place in a purpose-built facility designed to limit contamination from other products.
Controlled raw materials: AlzChem identifies its starting materials and documents its synthesis process.
Every batch tested: Analytical testing, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), is performed before batches are released.
Traceability: Licensed products can display a six-digit Creapure quality-seal code that consumers can verify.
The distinction is transparency. Rather than relying exclusively on a supplement brand's marketing, consumers can identify the company that actually manufactured the creatine.
Quality Checks
NSF CERTIFIED FOR SPORT
Independently evaluates the finished supplement through label and formulation review, contaminant testing, prohibited-substance screening, facility inspections and ongoing monitoring.
NSF certification helps verify that products contain their declared ingredients and do not contain unsafe levels of specified contaminants or tested prohibited substances.
INFORMED SPORT
Informed Sport is an independent certification program specializing in testing sports supplements for substances prohibited in competitive sports.
A distinguishing feature is its requirement that every batch of a certified product be tested before release. The program also conducts periodic blind testing of retail products and reviews manufacturing facilities.
Athletes can look up certified products and tested batches in the Informed Sport database.

Where to buy
Considerations when purchasing creatine:
Choose 100% creatine monohydrate. You don't need a proprietary blend, added stimulants or a more expensive alternative form.
Look for the Creapure quality seal. This identifies the German-manufactured ingredient and allows you to verify the product's authenticity using its six-digit QS code.
Prioritize independent certification, particularly if you are a collegiate or professional athlete.
Compare products by cost per 5-gram serving rather than the price of the container.
The following are three recommended products that meet the above criteria. Please note, we have no commercial relationship with these manufacturers. These recommendations are based on ingredient sourcing, manufacturing transparency, and product testing.
All 3 of these products meet the criteria for using Creapure and are independently tested. These also happen to be 3 of the best products on a cost per serving basis. For a full list of retailers who carry Creapure-sourced creatine, check out Creapure’s retailer links.
